# Fuse board replacement — JD Electricals

Replacing the consumer unit brings the protection for the whole house up to current standards, with every circuit tested and certified afterwards.

## What a fuse board replacement costs

Most domestic boards are a fixed price. A larger board, more circuits, or supply and earthing work found on the day will change it, which is why we look before quoting.

- Quotes are free and there is no call-out charge for arranging one.
- The price is agreed before anything is booked.
- Anything found once the job is open is quoted separately and agreed with you first.

## Why boards get replaced

It is rarely about the box. It is about what protects the people using the house.
- **No RCD protection:** Older boards protect the wiring but not the person. RCD protection is the part that trips fast enough to matter.
- **Age:** Much of the housing around Basingstoke went up in one period, so a lot of boards reached the end of their life at the same time.
- **No spare capacity:** If there is no way left on the board, a kitchen, garden room or EV charger cannot be added until it is changed.

## What happens on the day

Usually a single day, with the power off for a good part of it.
1. **Before:** Tell us roughly how many circuits and where the board is. A photo of the existing board answers most of it.
2. **During:** Power is off while the board is changed, then circuits are tested back on one at a time.
3. **After:** You get the certificate, and the board is labelled so anyone can see what each way does.

## What you end up with

Protection that meets current standards, and headroom for whatever comes next.
- **RCD protection throughout:** The part that protects people rather than just cables, on every circuit that needs it.
- **Room to add:** Spare ways for a kitchen circuit, a garden room or an EV charger without another board change.

### My board was replaced years ago. Does it need doing again?

Not automatically. What matters is whether it still protects every circuit. Older replacements often cover only part of the house, and an inspection shows which.

### Will the power be off all day?

Not all day, but for a significant part of it. If something has to stay running, say so beforehand and we will work around it.

### Do I get paperwork?

Yes. Certification for the work is part of the price, not an extra.
