Home EV chargepoint installed beside a driveway by JD Electricals

What an EV charger installation costs

A standard install on a straightforward property is a fixed price. Long cable runs, a board with no spare capacity, or an earthing arrangement that needs work will change it, so we check before quoting.

  • Quotes are free and there is no call-out charge for arranging one.
  • The price is agreed before anything is booked.
  • Anything found once the job is open is quoted separately and agreed with you first.

What decides the price

Three things, and all of them are answerable before we arrive.

Distance from the board

The run from the consumer unit to the parking space is the biggest single factor.

Board capacity

The charger needs its own way on the board and enough supply behind it. If there is neither, the board comes first.

Earthing

Some properties need additional earthing arrangements for an outdoor chargepoint, which is checked rather than assumed.

What is covered

A charger is a dedicated circuit, not an outdoor socket.

Included

  • Checking board capacity and earthing before the work is agreed
  • A dedicated circuit from the board to the chargepoint
  • Fitting, testing and commissioning the unit
  • Certification for the installation

Not included

  • Trenching or reinstating a driveway where the run has to cross it
  • Supply upgrades from the network operator, which is their work not ours
  • The charger itself where you would rather buy your own unit

What happens on the day

A straightforward install is a single visit.

  1. 01

    Before

Tell us where you park, roughly how far that is from the board, and a photo of the board. That answers most of the price.

  2. 02

    During

Power is off while the circuit is added, then the unit is commissioned and tested.

  3. 03

    After

You get the certification and a walk through how the unit works before we leave.

What you end up with

Charging at home on its own protected circuit.

A dedicated circuit
Its own protection at the board, rather than sharing with anything else in the house.
Certified work
Installation certification, which insurers and future buyers may ask for.

Common questions

The things people ask before booking.

Can I just use an outdoor socket?+

Not for regular charging. A charger draws a heavy sustained load and needs its own circuit and protection. A 13A socket is not designed for it.

What if my board has no space?+

It gets replaced as part of the job. Doing both in one visit is normally cheaper than a charger install followed by a board change.

Do you supply the charger?+

We can, or you can buy your own unit and we install it. Tell us which before we quote.
